Overview
The concept behind Impact100 is for at least one hundred women to donate $1,000 each and pool their contributions to make very large grants to nonprofit organizations that they collectively choose. Impact awards one or more grants of $100,000 each year in June.
Impact100’s goal is to provide its members with the opportunity to engage in philanthropy on a broader and deeper level than they could as individuals. Education is a primary focus. Each year, interested members participate in proposal review and evaluation, and learn about the meaningful work conducted by nonprofits in the region. They can attend presentations such as programs about demystifying financial statements, the art of grant-making, and the ways women and men differ in their philanthropy.
Each Impact100 member chooses the level of involvement that is right for her. Many women, after donating, simply want to follow the process and then select the grantees at the Annual Meeting. Others like to engage in proposal review and make site visits to applicant organizations. Still others seek leadership positions on the board or as the chair of a grant committee. It is the mix of different levels of involvement that makes Impact100 a success.
Best of all, every membership dollar goes directly toward the grants awarded the following June. Membership contributions are due by December 1, and are a one-year commitment only. Continuing as a member is an annual decision. Impact100’s modest administrative expenses are covered by interest earned on the collective fund and by operating donations from members and Friends of Impact100. Many members write their checks for more than $1,000, to help pay for audit and insurance expenses, website fees, and other costs.
