Since 1993, The Attic Youth Center in Philadelphia has provided a safe and supportive community where lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth can develop into healthy, independent, civic minded adults. The Attic is now one of the largest community centers in the US committed exclusively to serving LGBTQ youth and allies. On a daily basis, anywhere from 25 to 70 underprivileged youth (ages 14 -24) attend programs including art, music, radio-podcast, HIV prevention, support and discussion groups. The Attic Youth Center has a kitchen which provides meals and snacks, as well as space for mental health counseling and HIV testing. LGBTQ youth are high risk for dropping out of high school, landing in jail, or attempting suicide. Many have aged out of foster care and are homeless. They are unsure how to find affordable housing and lack the skills to live independently. A core mission grant from Impact100 would help these homeless youth obtain housing (with Covenant House and other housing partners) along with counseling, job readiness programming, and crisis services.
